Wessington Nature Reserve

Tucked away on the edge of our village, Wessington Nature Reserve is a peaceful green space that offers a haven for wildlife – and a quiet retreat for residents and visitors alike.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of the Village

The nature reserve sits just off Brackenfield Lane, offering a patch of unspoiled countryside that’s perfect for gentle walks, wildlife spotting, or simply enjoying some time outdoors. It’s a place where nature is allowed to thrive, with a mix of grassland, wetland, wildflowers, and trees creating habitats for a wide range of species.

Whether you're a keen birdwatcher, a family on a Sunday stroll, or just someone looking for a bit of fresh air, the reserve has something to offer all year round.

What You Might See

The reserve is home to a rich variety of plants and animals. Depending on the season, you might spot:

  • Butterflies, bees, and other pollinators enjoying wildflower areas
  • Frogs, newts, and dragonflies near the pond and wetter areas
  • Birds such as wrens, robins, finches, and even the occasional kestrel overhead

We’re proud of the biodiversity in the reserve, and we’re always working to protect and enhance it.

How the Parish Council is Involved

Wessington Parish Council owns and manages the nature reserve on behalf of the community. We work with local volunteers to help maintain paths, control invasive species, and make small improvements to ensure it remains a safe and welcoming space for both wildlife and people.

We also welcome ideas from residents about how to improve the reserve or use it for community activities such as guided walks, nature days, or educational visits.

Respecting the Space

To help keep the reserve special for everyone, we kindly ask visitors to:

  • Stick to the marked paths
  • Keep dogs under control and clean up after them
  • Take litter home
  • Avoid disturbing wildlife, especially during nesting seasons

Get Involved

We’re always happy to hear from anyone who’d like to help care for the nature reserve. Whether it’s lending a hand with a work party, sharing wildlife sightings, or suggesting ideas for future projects, your input is welcome.
